What you should know about mercury containing athletic flooring...GLE has completed assessment studies and removal oversight at three (3) public universities within Florida and Georgia, where mercury-containing rubber flooring on gymnasium floors was present. The objective during these evaluations was to determine removal methodologies that would protect the personnel completing the removal, future occupants of the space, and the environment.

The EPA Decision Tool: The EPA has developed a Decision Tool that has been updated to reflect the new revisions to the Definition of Solid Waste which will help generators determine whether their wastes are hazardous.

Energy Audits: As the United States considers ways to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the associated foreign oil imports, energy conservation is becoming a more prevalent method in reducing energy consumption. The foundation for energy conservation is an energy audit.
EPA Begins Enforcement of the Lead RRP Law: Many wondered how the EPA was going to enforce their newly created Lead Renovation, Repair and Training Rule, but the secret is out, literally. The EPA is calling documentation required of firms their "Secret Weapon," in catching violators. The EPA doesn't even have to leave their office, a simple phone call requesting documentation is all that is needed to enact fines of up to $32,500 per violation.

Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule: Beginning April 2010, all contractors performing work that disturbs lead-based paint in
homes, childcare facilities and schools built before 1978, must:
· Be EPA certified
· Provide notifications and record keeping
· Follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination
· Perform a cleaning verification after completion of the lead renovation work
The new regulation is called the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP Rule) and applies to any renovation work in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. A child-occupied facility includes schools, child care facilities, daycare facilities and other buildings where children under the age of 6 attend.

PCB Caulk in Older Buildings and Schools: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued guidance to building owners and school administrators on Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) exposures from caulks used in many buildings constructed or renovated between 1950 and 1978. The purpose of this guidance document is to assist the public in understanding and reducing the risks posed by PCB caulking, through good work practices, testing and assessing the materials, and clean-up procedures.
