GLE served as NationBank’s environmental consultant from 1991-2003.  Under this contract, GLE has performed a wide range of services ranging from asbestos surveys, indoor air quality evaluations, environmental site assessments, civil engineering, architecture, full design/build environmental remediation, and construction.

As asbestos consultant, GLE has performed asbestos surveys of over 60 facilities throughout Florida and Georgia.  Prior to facility renovation, GLE provided design, contract administration, and air monitoring during abatement.  GLE also performed turnkey abatement on these projects.  Project sizes have ranged from $500 to $825,000.

GLE has performed over 50 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and over 30 Phase II ESAs for NationsBank.  Tasks associated with Phase I ESAs include:  a site survey; a detailed site walkthrough including the interior of all improvements; inventory of on-site hazardous materials, records and MSDS; vicinity (area) reconnaissance; photographic documentation; interviews with previous and current site owners, operators, employees, tenants; search of federal and state environmental regulatory database; 50-year chain of title search; determination of existence of environmental liens against the property; search for Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps; review of historic and current aerial photographs; review of soil survey books and U.S.G.S. topographic quadrangle maps; physical review of storage tank files and other environmental files at local environmental regulatory office; research of building and demolition permits for the site; and evaluation of past and present site use and operations. Investigations for asbestos containing materials are also performed when requested.  GLE’s typical Phase II ESAs include:  soil, surface water or groundwater testing (includes soil boring and monitor well installations); testing radon gas levels; testing for lead in drinking water, or paints; drum sampling and analysis; and geotechnical or geophysical investigations.

GLE has performed a number of underground storage tank (UST) removal projects ranging from removal of one small heating oil UST with no associated contamination to the removal of seven (7) abandoned USTs and contamination discovered during site renovation/construction activities.

GLE has conducted three contamination assessments at NationsBank sites with petroleum contamination.  One of the sites also had chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination.  Contamination assessments were conducted to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of contamination and included the installation of soil borings and monitor wells; research of local and regional geologic and hydrogeologic conditions, potable well inventory, aquifer characterization, slug tests/pumping tests, soil and groundwater sampling and determination of groundwater flow direction, and preparation of contamination assessment report (CAR).

One CAR began in 1993 when a small heating oil UST was excavated and removed from this site.  Minor groundwater contamination was discovered, and further investigations revealed on-site petroleum contamination from a source other than the heating oil tank.  Review of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps revealed that a motor car company and gasoline station had operated on the site in 1945.  Performance of a ground penetrating radar survey revealed no signs of the former USTs.  A full contamination assessment was performed at the site.  GLE’s CAR revealed a groundwater contamination plume extending approximately 570 feet in the east-west direction (direction of groundwater flow) and approximately 170 feet in the north-south direction.  A separate plume of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]) was also detected at the NationsBank site.  This plume is believed to have originated from an off-site source to the north of the NationsBank property (a dry cleaners facility).  The CAR was completed in October 1994 and was approved by the FDEP on March 21, 1995.
