Abatement and Demolition of Hangar Building 747 and East Annex Offices
GLE served as the design and construction manager (for a fee) for the environmental remediation and demolition of 2 structures located at SBIAA, formerly Norton Air Force Base.
Hangar 747 was formerly used as an aircraft maintenance facility. Portions of the facility were currently leased and were undergoing renovations, with the majority of the structure vacant. The project consisted of the evaluation, abatement and remediation of hazardous materials, demolition of the vacant portion of the hangar to the slab and construction of a temporary wall for the occupied building. Due to prior site operations, numerous sumps in the hangar were inspected and found to contain various hazardous wastes. In addition, a former industrial waste line had caused soil contamination beneath and adjacent to the structure. Other hazardous materials included asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, hydrocarbons and mercury. GLE’s remediation design included the closure of all sumps and abatement of all hazardous materials prior to demolition, without impacting the contaminated subsurface soil.
The East Annex Office project consisted of abatement and interior demolition in Hangar 763. Environmental remediation consisted of asbestos, mold contaminated materials, PCBs, refrigerants, and mercury. General demolition consisted of all interior walls, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems.
During construction, GLE served as on-site construction manager and provided on-site environmental oversight. The project began construction in June 2008. Construction was completed in September 2008, within the 90 days mandated by the project contract.
