Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens
GLE conducted an emergency response industrial hygiene project at the Department of Management Services (DMS) facility in response to an HIV-infected building occupant that had suffered a seizure. The occupant had spit and/or vomited in a corridor of the facility. GLE initiated an emergency response, and after meeting with on-site building personnel and evaluating the potential bio-contaminated area, GLE established an exclusion zone. GLE then coordinated and supervised the on-site services of a biohazard remediation contractor to decontaminate the area. GLE outlined the anticipated procedures and provided guidance concerning appropriate levels of personal protective equipment (PPE). Removable, affected building materials were disposed; and the entire affected area was then sanitized with an approved biocide. All materials designated for disposal were properly packaged, labeled, and transported for incineration by a biohazard waste transporter.
