Environmental Services - Asbestos
“Great job with very little notice.” – Mike O’Brein, Georgia Pacific
In June 2007, GLE was awarded a five year Master Service Agreement for Environmental Services with the Georgia-Pacific Corporation for work at the Palatka Pulp and Paper Mill located 60 miles south of Jacksonville, Florida. This facility has received the OSHA VPP Star designation for outstanding health and safety performance. The Palatka mill began operating in 1947 as part of Hudson Pulp & Paper Corporation. In 1979, the mill became part of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, which had acquired Hudson. In 2005, Koch Industries acquired the Georgia-Pacific Operations. The Palatka Operations is composed of two primary business units, Kraft and tissue paper manufacturing. The mill produces natural and bleached Kraft paper, tissue paper, and a comprehensive line of consumer and commercial tissue products.
GLE performed a facility wide asbestos survey from June 2007 to July 2008. The survey included the sampling and analysis of over 3,500 bulk samples of suspect asbestos-containing materials. As part of the survey, all sample locations were marked in the field with numbered metal tags attached with a tie-wire. Additionally, all sample locations where ACM was determined to be present were marked with red metal bands, while all sample locations where ACM was not determined to be present were marked with blue metal bands. GLE provided an electronic database of Sample Identification Markers and associated results.
Currently, GLE provides on-call environmental consulting services including asbestos, lead-based paint, industrial hygiene and indoor air quality services.
