Hillsborough County School Board Radon Consulting

GLE has served as an environmental consultant for the school district, and has managed more than 1,600 projects, including radon, asbestos, lead-based paint, IAQ, emergency response, environmental, and tradition-al architecture/engineering.

As a radon consultant, GLE performed initial radon surveys in over 16,000,000 square feet of school facilities. This project consisted of radon sampling in 20% of the rooms in over 179 permanent structures and 2,500 portable facilities. GLE also provided mitigation design and follow-up testing for those facilities where elevated radon levels were detected.

In 2018, GLE provided radon consulting services for the School Board that consisted of:

• Researching and developing radon sampling plans for approximately 137 schools
• Training in-house school board staff on deployment of radon sampling devices
• Equipping school board staff with portable computer tablets to record data during deployment and retrieval of radon sampling devices
• Development of an internal database system to track, record, organize and produce State of Florida radon compliance data and forms for each school

In addition to the management of the radon sampling of approximately 137 schools, GLE also performed continuous radon sampling within 13 schools that had previously had elevated radon measurements. This continuous monitoring, along with working with School Board maintenance staff, GLE was able to identify and provide solutions and recommendations through modification and/or scheduling changes to each facility’s mechanical systems in order to eliminate the elevated radon results within each of the identified buildings.
